Our INTERMEDIATE  program builds on the strong foundations developed in BEGINNER (CANSail 1 & 2) and provides instruction for sailors who are ready to advance their skills. Using the national Sail Canada guidelines, the Intermediate program focuses on refining boat‑handling, expanding sailors’ comfort in a wider range of conditions, and introducing more technical sailing concepts.

Our Intermediate program provides instruction for the developing sailor. Sailors are exposed to a greater variety of conditions as well as basic tactics and strategies. At this stage, sailors become capable of participating in regattas and are welcome to do so if they wish; however, this class is equally well‑suited for sailors who simply want to continue improving their skills, spend time on the water, and enjoy sailing without the pressure of competition.

There are two boat options at this level: the Optimist and the 420, allowing sailors to progress in the class that best suits their age, size, and goals.

INTERMEDIATE  Opti

This program is designed for sailors who are interested in learning how to race an Optimist and want to develop the skills specific to this boat. Coaching focuses on Opti‑specific boat handling, equipment setup, and the introductory tactics and strategies used in youth racing. Training takes place both on and off the water to help sailors feel confident and prepared.

As sailors progress, they become capable of participating in regattas and are welcome to attend local events if they choose. Green Fleet racing provides a supportive, low‑pressure environment that emphasizes learning and positive experiences. At the same time, this program is equally well‑suited for sailors who simply want to build their skills, spend time on the water, and enjoy the Optimist without committing to competition.

Club boats are limited, so personal boat ownership is encouraged but not required.

INTERMEDIATE 420

Designed for sailors who have completed BEGINNER in the  RAD, this program supports sailors who are ready to take the next step in double‑handed sailing. The focus is on developing the skills specific to the 420, including advanced boat handling, teamwork, and the introduction of trapeze and spinnaker.

What’s the difference?

  • 420 RAD is a reduced‑rig version of the 420, sailed without trapeze or spinnaker. It allows new sailors to learn the fundamentals of double‑handed sailing in a stable, simplified setup.
  • The full 420 includes both trapeze and spinnaker, requiring more coordination, communication, and technical skill between skipper and crew. Intermediate 420 sailors begin learning how to use this equipment safely and effectively.

Coaching emphasizes the technical and tactical elements that prepare sailors for the next stage in the 420 pathway. Sailors refine their on‑water communication, learn how to manage more complex sail controls, and begin applying basic racing concepts in a supportive and developmental environment. This program serves as a bridge between Beginner (RAD) and the 420 Race Team, giving sailors the confidence and experience needed to progress, whether they are interested in racing or simply want to continue improving their skills in a double‑handed boat

This program is offered in two‑week sessions, running Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for both weeks.
